Website & Server Security

It’s important!

Security is not an absolute, it’s a continuous process. Security is about risk reduction, not risk elimination, and risk will never be zero. It’s about employing the appropriate security controls that best help address the risks and threats to your website.

Recommended actions to harden and improve your website’s security:

  • Limit access: It is important to keep the number of people who have administrative access to your site to a minimum. Ditto the number of possible ‘entry points’; I can do this by only installing web applications that you need and use, removing any unused plugins and themes.
  • Trusted sources: I will only provide you with plugins from trusted sources. Googling for a free version of a premium plugin is a recipe for disaster! Malicious developers distribute what are known as ‘nulled’ plugins which contain malicious code that will extend the premium plugin, but bundle it with malware.
  • Passwords: The goal with your password is to make it hard for other people to guess and hard for a brute force attack to succeed; a brute force attack attempts to access your website by trying usernames & passwords over and over again until it gets in. It can be very successful too – especially with usernames such as ‘admin’ and passwords like ‘123456’! Passwords need to be complex, long and unique.
  • Backups: I will maintain reliable backups, occasionally verifying the integrity of backups to make sure that I can restore your website if it is damaged. The server management team can recover your website if it is compromised.
  • Stay Up-to-Date: I need to ensure I stay up-to-date with your WordPress installation, including plugins and themes, putting an administrative control in place that requires that I regularly the status of your site and its extendable components.
